If you own an iPhone or iPad, you've probably encountered HEIC files. Apple switched to this format in iOS 11, and while it saves significant storage space compared to JPG, it creates a compatibility headache: HEIC files won't open on most Windows PCs, Android devices, or older software.

What is HEIC?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It's based on the HEVC (H.265) video compression standard, adapted for still images. Apple adopted it because HEIC files are roughly 50% smaller than equivalent JPG files while maintaining similar or better visual quality. The downside: HEIC support outside Apple's ecosystem remains limited.

Why Convert HEIC to JPG?

  • Sharing online: Social media, email, and most websites prefer JPG
  • Windows compatibility: Open photos on any PC without extra codecs
  • Editing software: Many photo editors don't support HEIC natively
  • Professional use: Clients, printers, and agencies often require JPG
  • Archiving: JPG is a universal standard unlikely to become obsolete

Method 1: Use FileTools.eu (Recommended)

The fastest way to convert HEIC to JPG with no software installation is using FileTools.eu's free converter. Drop your HEIC files on the page, conversion happens instantly in your browser, then download your JPG. Your photos are never uploaded to any server.

Method 2: Configure iPhone to Save as JPG

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Scroll down to Camera
  3. Tap Formats
  4. Select Most Compatible (instead of High Efficiency)

This changes future photos to JPG format. Existing HEIC photos won't be converted, but you'll stop accumulating new ones.

Method 3: Using macOS Preview

On Mac: open the HEIC file in Preview, go to File → Export, choose JPEG format, adjust quality, and save.

JPG Quality Settings

  • 90-100%: Maximum quality, larger file. Use for printing or archiving
  • 75-85%: High quality, good balance. Ideal for web and sharing
  • 50-70%: Noticeable compression. Use only when file size is critical

HEIC vs JPG: Which is Better?

HEIC wins on file size (50% smaller) and HDR support. JPG wins on universal compatibility. For photos you keep in Apple ecosystem, HEIC is excellent. For anything you share or edit in non-Apple software, JPG is the safer choice.
